The area of an average bathroom is not too large, and as such when furnishing, each and every one square centimetres of space must be “fought-for”. What are the furniture necessary, and what are the ones we will have to let go? What colours must be used in order to make our bathrooms’ atmospheres cosy, intimate, or refreshing?
The styles of our homes are defined by the furniture and different accessories used: curtains, carpets, lamps, vases. The wall is nothing more than a background creating a moderate harmony. In the bathroom, however, all these are the other way around – in this case, the strongest emphasis falls on the walls. When designing the interior we first think of tones and then try to find out what accessories we will need. We study how they should be placed the most practical way while taking into consideration the layout of the installed sewage and water plumbing, and only after all this, we turn our attentions towards the furniture to be used. There is usually very little space left for these, and such only those absolutely necessary will be used. In short, the primary problem in connection with furnishing the bathroom is the lack of space available. By carefully choosing the tone-pairs the sense of space can be increased, while maintaining the cosy atmosphere. Furniture and accessories will define the overall style of the bathroom. Considering the extremely wide selection available, it is no easy task to pick the right one. In bathroom showrooms there are furniture with a myriad of different designs, materials, and styles to pick from, making it easier for us to find the one. Collections more often than not consist of the same components: a cupboard to be used under the basin, the wash-basin installed or placed on the counter, a taller cupboard, shelves, and a mirror. Due to their easier cleaning the use of wall-hung or standing basins are often decided upon. Both of these solutions are very practical. In the case the bathroom has a large enough area it is advisable to use cupboards with different heights. The narrow and shallow cupboards provide very popular choices and almost all manufacturers have these in their selections. When furnishing the bathroom, it is almost unavoidable to make some compromises – i.e. it is possible that we will have no space to install a complete set of cupboards. This should not be a problem though, because bathroom furniture are usually available by components, all that must be taken care about is the components’ harmonizing with each other in style and tone.
Style, colours, material
It is a mistake to assume that a larger room is easier to furnish; this also carries its difficulties. In the case we have much free space available, we tend to place all furniture next to walls, making the centre of the room boring and uninteresting. There is a solution for everything, however. It is possible to place the bathtub on a platform, using the plumbing block as a divider. The interior designers suggest us to make the style used for the bathroom matching to that of the whole home. In the case the overall style is high-tech, use an under-sink cupboard made of metal or glass, in the case the overall style is classical, use furniture made of wood or even from tiled Ytong blocks. The high-gloss furniture that has come into fashion recently matches the modern style perfectly.
Design
The role of bathroom has changed drastically in the past 100 years. The most fundamental change occurred in our relationships towards our bathrooms – making them a place to relax and unwind rather than merely a place to clean. We spend at least an hour here on a daily basis, which explains why we expect more from the furniture used as well: we would like furniture that are easy to use while help in creating the positive atmosphere. This means that the furniture must be durable as well as aesthetically pleasing.
Colours
The most common colour for the bathroom is light blue which is associated with cleanness and freshness while to usual decorating motifs are sea-stars, fish, and different boats and ships. Colours other than blue have been popular choices lately. We have the option to use any colour when designing the bathroom with the pairing of brown, beige, grey, orange, red, green, black and white have been the most common. The furniture however is usually manufactured in white matching any styles and any other colours easily. In order to avoid the interior becoming too boring the atmosphere can be uplifted with the colours and textures of the accessories and the colour of the wall.
Materials
The ambient temperature and relative humidity change often and quite radically causing all kinds of problems in the bathrooms with a smaller area and less than ideal ventilation. The material used for the furniture as such must be water-proof. The most widely used material is chipboard or particle board with a special coating. Another widely used material is wood since there are water-resistant types. Oak is especially suitable but more exotic types like wenge and iroko are also popular choices. There is furniture made of cherry or beech as well, although these must be waterproofed using varnish.
